Zero - no USB

Sun May 08, 2016 12:53 pm

I finally got round to setting my Zero up.. but I think it's USB port is duff.
It boots with no problems but no kb or mouse or dongle is recognised. If I plug a mouse in the sensor led switches on for a couple of seconds then goes off. I've tried two psus, both work on my 3B.
I think I should just send it back, unless anyone has any ideas.

A lot of us were caught out with the fact that you although you can power the Zero from either connection - only the "middle" one is actually a USB port - the one on the outside is just for power

They are labelled but no self-respecting geek is going read them :)

Hmm.
Following this thread
viewtopic.php?p=850218#p850218
makes me think my brand new OTG USB adapter is duff, not the USB on the Zero.

What cable do you use to connect USB devices to the Pi Zero?

The Pi Zero USB will operate as a USB device unless you use the correct sort of cable which make the Zero USB operate as a host port. Think it is called an OTG cable, but not sure. This connects a pin that is used to set it to USB device or host mode and allows it to operate as a USB host. If you use an ordinary USB cable then this pin will remain unconnected and the USB will operate as a USB device. Just a though, but could account for why you don't see any USB devices.

As an example at Pimeroni they have this https://shop.pimoroni.com/collections/r ... daptor-kit

Yeah, I'm using the OTG adapter provided with the essentials kit that came with my Zero from PiHut.

Yes, just missed your last post. You might be able to check if the USB is OK if you connect the Pi Zero to a USB port on a PC or laptop with a normal USB cable and see what it shows. I believe it should show as some sort of device if it is working.

EDIT: Just tried with a Pi Zero connected to my Win7 laptop. Don't see anything with an SD card plugged into the Pi Zero, But without the SD card plugged in I see a device "BCM2708 Boot".

It does indeed show up on my pc with another cable, MrEngman. See my post previous with a link to the thread on this forum explaining to try that. (you didn't read that one either ;) )
I'll get another OTG cable, that seems most likely culprit.
