Confused

Sun May 01, 2016 9:13 am

This post isn't to flame a fire or insult anyone. I've been on here a week, and thought this was the place for good information. But all I see is insults and arrogance... which in turn quiets those who want to help. The Raspberry Pi is all about education. It's nice to have knowledgeable people here... but if you just want to insult those with what you consider stupid questions... just don't add your 2 cents. I'll bet more people will start helping each other.

strikethrough added by moderator, as it seems the thread was created to "to flame a fire or insult".

A bit contradictory and not a description of the forums that I recognise.

If you see any inappropriate posts the appropriate response is to flag them for moderator attention.

Joan, you have been nothing but respectable. There's one gentlemen (name withheld), who has to leave his two cents to every post he feels like bashing. I have seen people post, he calls them stupid and their stuff dribble. Who would want to post with that kind of attitude?

hootie,

You worry too much. This is the internet. Life on the internet is like that. This is actually one of the more civilized technical forums, there are much worse. The moderators here do good job of purging the worst of the dross that turns up. Heck, I got banned from here for a week one time. Put on your thick skin and there is a wealth of good information available here and people ready to answer questions.

You are right, we should always strive for better though.

Another very friendly technical forum is here: http://forums.parallax.com/ should you ever have a need to get into micro-controllers the Parallax Propeller and the community around it are great.

Once you have been here for a while you recognise the special posters. Then it depends on your mind set - you can either be annoyed or amused at their posts.

hootie,

I can only guess at who you mean. Could be me!

I must admit I am guilty of suffering from the overwhelming urge to correct any incorrect statements I read here, and else where.

After all, if the information is wrong it needs to be corrected, otherwise it's there waiting to misguide, confuse, and waste the time of anyone reading it in the future.

But there comes the problem: How to offer corrections to faulty statements without inferring their author is stupid? Try as you might people will often take such refutations as a personal attack on them. So they retaliate, a "debate" ensues, it goes down hill fast.

Or add them to your "foes" list and you won't see their posts any more :-)

I've been on here a few months, and it is a great place for information.

As for the insults and arrogance, as the saying goes: if you ask a stupid question, expect a stupid answer.

People's initial posts don't help situations either. I've seen a number where people start their queries with hostility. I understand frustration plays a part, but people need to check their posts before actually posting them. If you come across as being hostile, that's exactly how you're going to be received, and responded to.

In spite of everything, it hasn't hindered my desire to help people with the limited knowledge I have. Anybody who is put off helping people because of petty comments, never truly wanted to help people in the first place.

It's me. And I've blocked Hootie for being a complete plonker.

I've just reported the exceedingly childish and unpleasant private message from him. I hope the moderators consider that offensive enough to ban him for a few days to cool off and learn some respect.

I agree this is a pretty rude forum sometimes, though not quite in the league of somewhere the official Oracle forums, which is pretty much the worst I've seen.

Some will sometimes forget to try and see things through the eyes of others is the problem I think, one of the cognitive bias problems.

However, I do hope Hootie can see the irony in his last comment.

Sorry, the only irony in my statement is it's true of the two UK idiots who are ******************. If pointing that out makes me borderline unintelligent... so be it.

If someone asks a question... and you have nothing to add to it without insulting someone... just don't post. It's really just that simple. My being annoyed at these people is in direct response to their antagonistic nature.

Can a moderator please just lock this post? It is going nowhere... and has gone completely off topic.

@hootie, I think you are the problem here, but locking the thread is a good idea, if it keeps me from having to delete more offensive posts from you.
