Raspberry Pi Necessary Modules

Tue Apr 26, 2016 8:54 pm

Hello everyone,

I'm very new to Raspberry Pis and I'm looking forward to working on a project that involves a pin pad, a fingerprint reader, and a camera for face recognition. However, after looking around, I found that there are many different modules and different versions for the Raspberry Pi itself. I was wondering if you could help me find which ones I would have to choose for all of them to be compatible together.

My goal: Create a multi-factor authentication device using fingers, pin codes, and faces as authentication methods. I would then use an SQL database to store user information in order to grant or deny access.

Thank you,

I would suggest going for the latest, most powerful version, the PI3. That way you ensure it will remain available and supported for as long as possible. The fact it is the same price a s a PI2 also helps in this. You could look at a PI Zero but the extra processing power of the PI3 makes the decision for me.

So if I go for the Pi 3 I won't have any sort of compatibility issues with the modules I want?

No one really knows which modules you want however, you would like to think that any active software authors would support the latest pi hardware...

especially if you are going to be processing facial recognition, you want the fastest cpu, so pi3.
If you really are thinking about security access, they do have a true IR camera for ~$300. resolution isn't great, but as a secondary check that the face is in fact real, it would work.
