Can KODI be installed on Raspbian?

Sun Apr 24, 2016 7:37 pm

Can I just install Kodi on the desktop of Raspbian instead of using OSMC? And if so, what version of Kodi works?

Yes, 15.x in in the repository.
Bare install is much faster.

Hi there, still very much a Pi and Linux noob :P My last Pi was a zero and was never connected to the web.

What does that mean? And does this mean I'm stuck with an outdated version? What does this limit me with, do all addons still work?

Many many thanks :)

No everything will still work.

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install kodi

That's great! Many thanks for your help, can't wait to use this on my new Pi 3 :D

Last question, if I were to install Ubuntu Mate on my Pi3 instead, would I gain a more up to date version of Kodi?

Probably, but there's no reason to get the very newest version if what's there works. You most likely won't get anything meaningful out of the newer version.

Here you have instructions on how to install the latests versions of Kodi on Raspbian Jessie, currently 16.0. They won't work on Ubuntu because of different dependencies.

This versions have more features and are more optimized than the current Kodi version on Raspbian Repo.
Maybe tomorrow, I will upload Kodi 16.1.
