Setting up Pi without flashed SD card?

Sat Apr 23, 2016 8:06 am

Hi, this might be a dumb question but can I flash an SD card remotely from Windows?

I just got a Raspberry Pi 3, and a whole kit that came with it (including mini SD card). However, I don't have an SD card slot on my PC, so I don't have a way to flash the SD card (doh!). I can go buy a USB-SD adapter but I'm wondering if there's an easier way.

I've tried to do some searches but nothing relevant has come up.

Is it possible to SSH or setup wireless and flash the SD card remotely? Or is the absolutely essential first step to have an already-flashed SD card?

Without a flashed SD card a RPi does absolutely nothing except light a LED or two.

Even with NOOBS on the SD card, it is very useful to get a $1 USB SD card adapter for the future and to save yourself a lot of pains.
There are 10 types of people: those who understand binary and those who don't.
