Eth fail: Xfi Surrond 5.1 USB device & Dell U2412M powerhub

Wed Aug 15, 2012 12:37 am

Hi ppl,

I just discovered that actually I can use my powered usb hub in my Dell U2412M display. I wanted to attach the external soundcard Sound Blaster X-Fi Surround 5.1. The screen manufacturer claims the 2.5W power for each one of the 4 downstream ports.

First then I hooked up the soundcard directly it was resetting round and round. When I attached to the powerhub it starts working. Then attach my keyboard Logitech UltraFlatX. Everything is fine untl the moment I attach my mouse, Razer Salmosa. Doesn't matter if I put the cable directly to the board or the screenhub, when soundcard is attached it causes ethernet card to fail (visible in dmesg below). Both keyboard and mouse works perfectly with Ethernet but only when this soundcard isn't attached. I couldn't have found power consumption information about the soundcard unfortunately, Creative isn't very verbose about this product.
I also tried different device, the IR remote controler receiver. The result was similar. The Ethernet card started to be unresponsive. But not that much like with the mouse, it responded with one ping.

Is this some USB specific situation or bug in Ethernet card or USB bus in Rpi ?

First of all it would be good to test if it's a problem when you connect third device to USB hub or if it's a problem when you connect one particular device. Then it would be good idea to test the voltage between TP1 and TP2 to see if it's in spec (4.75V to 5.25V) after connecting each device. Then you could check voltage on the USB hub ports to see if they are higher (maybe your HUB is not being powered for some reason for example).
