Firewire (!)

Is there any way I can add firewire to a raspberry pi without breaking the bank, trying to work with my Cable Box (Motorola DCT6412) to turn it into a sling box like interphase, and short of getting a second hand Mac Mini, I have no idea how to use that protocol and stream to other computers.

Gonna bump this post, as I'm trying to get a Raspberry Pi to emulate a slingbox or DV recorder over Firewire, since CableCard isn't available for the premium channels on the owner end.

Without being very versed in electronics and programming (on Linux) it is impossible - and then you still have to have all necessary tools.
Not to metion it may be more expensive than just buy something else which works OOB.

I don't think you can easily convert from firewire to usb

Hmm - i wasn't thinking about USB either.
They (FW and USB) are so different , it is impossible to convert between them.

I would also love to see a Raspberry Pi with a firewire connection.
I also would like to use it as a DV recorder.

OP was asking for a cheep solution
the only way your going to get fire wire on an RPi is either
1) something special via the GPiO
or
2) a Fire wire to USB converter / adapter [no simple will need gubbins on it so will not be cheep]

before asking , see my comment above)

There are Bandwith problems on GPIO , and USB to Firewire is like connecting your garden hose to a wall outlet and then make it output water.
