Will my 5V 700mA Phone charger work with the Pi 3?

Sun Apr 10, 2016 7:42 pm

I use an old blackberry phone charger of 5V 700mA to power my Pi Zero, can I use this to power a Pi 3?

Probably not, but i did use a 700mA with a Pi 2 so it might work.

Probably not, unless you run it slowly (no overclocking, possibly no turbo) with no peripherals (headless). The recommended PSU is 2.5A, which allows plenty for peripherals.

Not if you want your pi3 to function very well. My pi3 struggled with 5V 2A tablet usb power adapter.

.7A is less than 1/3 of the recommended Amperage, and chances are good your "5V" charger doesn't put out 5 volts at all.

Why not just get yourself a $6 power supply that is made for the pi3? 5.25V 2.4A

Or this from CPC: SC14026. £5.95 +VAT. Free delivery over £10. It's the "official" Pi3 PSU. Drives my Pi3 and WD 1TB hard drive.
