Raspberry Pi 3 and O.S. drive.

Sun Apr 10, 2016 11:48 am

Hi to all,

I'm new to raspberry world and I've a big doubt.

For the operating system is a good idea the use of microsd instead of usb hdd?

The microsd is for a storage purpose, can be fast or slow but anyway is not ideal for having thousands of write cycle that happens in normal operating system..

Your opinions??

regards.

The ability to boot from iscsi (and other network protocols apparently) also exist (but still over USB).

You always need an SD card to boot the Raspberry. The
Raspberry 1 and 2 can only boot from SD card.

But you can "hand over" the boot process to an USB harddisk
after initial boot from a SD card. Search for "USB rootfs" .

This way the SD card can be read-only and very small (32 MB).

The Pi3 can boot from a USB disk, but the firmware is not ready yet.

Using SD cards was an inspired design decision.
They are tiny, cheap, and silent, like the Pi itself.

Just like any SSD, there are various well known ways to reduce writes to the card, ultimately (as described above), using it only for booting.

If you choose a quality, genuine, card you should be fine. Like any modern computer, make sure it is shut down cleanly before removing the card or powering off.
