The whole things a glitch!

Sun Aug 12, 2012 4:33 pm

I'm probably just being thick of course :)

How do I set auto-subscribe to threads I've joined in on?

Is there a good way of viewing/posting using 'droid phones?
E.g what type of forum software is this - is there an app for it?

I just don't like it - its seems very "amateurish" - its does a basic job but I just feel it could look and operate a lot better :)

E.g Prominent links to subscribed threads for one.

regards

Go to your Profile/Forum Settings and select the "Prosilver" theme .
Much better IMHO.

• Don't like the board ? Missing features ? Change to the prosilver theme ! You can find it in your settings.
• Don't like to search the forum BEFORE posting 'cos it's useless ? Try googling : yoursearchtermshere site:raspberrypi.org

I agree with you, but the only responses you're going to get (other than from me) are:

1) It is what it is - it is not going to change - so get used to it.

2) It is PHPBoard - the industry leader! It is the industry standard! It is good! It is the best thing since sliced cheese. You should be honored to be allowed to be using it.

Now, back to reality. The truth is that the auto-subscribe thing is such a no-brainer. It should be obvious, but I don't think there is any way to "configure" the board to do it for you. The only thing you can do is every time you post to a thread, you must "Watch" it. In fact, the whole "Watch" (which used to be called "subscribe") thing is a botch for the fact that the way it should work is that those threads should just automatically come up for you. Having to constantly track your email box (which for me is on an entirely different computer than my browser) in order to keep current on your threads is such a botch.

In fact, every time I see one of these fancy "modern" GUI/Web-BBS thingies, my first reaction is "My 20 year old 'trn' works better, faster, and has the needed features that this GUI thing is missing". Such will always be the case...
And some folks need to stop being fanboys and see the forest behind the trees.

With Prosilver it is called "subscribe topic" and is at the bottom of the page.

1) I refuse to switch to some other "interface" - that's just a typical kludge/workaround. It does nothing to address the real problem.

2) Even if you do switch, AIUI, it doesn't fix the real problem - which is lack of "auto-subscribe". That seems to be a built-in limitation of the "software".
And some folks need to stop being fanboys and see the forest behind the trees.

I disagree -the forum software is fine - it's the dumbed down raspberrypi skin that hides too many features.

Once on subsilver it all works fine.
Android app - Raspi Card Imager - download and image SD cards - No PC required !

That option is also available:

@Max - at last :) but does that work?

@miker - but if no-one tells anyone about prosilver then .... :)

Maybe if the Forum Gods are listening :) Change default to "RaspberryPi-fied" customised prosilver - red/green colors for starters :)

This should not have been so hard :)

But maybe we are there now :)

Apart from the colour scheme :)

Thanks everyone

Hi

It does for me and on every PHPBB forum I have knowingly used.

"Work" in what sense?

What do you get back as a result of setting that option?

Well, basically if I now post in a thread - its on my "View your posts" list so that's prob good enough for me :)

I don't know if it emails me but prob don't need that level of communication

Simon

Should have been the default setting of course because in what world would you NOT want to track threads you've interacted with :)

PS Who's running the board BTW?

OK - same as the current system.

That's still almost useless - although I suppose that it is, at least, automatic. Still not great, though.

That's still almost useless -
Problem is - I think NOT pestering me with emails is good :)
So the "feature" works in my favour - as long as when I visit the forum, I can click on a button and see all threads I'm across :)

With Chromium under Arch, the personal bar to access the control panel, does not show up.
I used firefox to change the theme, now Chromium is ok ;)

Actually, what we keep saying is that there are tweaks we know need to happen, the issue for those with the power to make the change to have the time to do so
2) It is PHPBoard - the industry leader! It is the industry standard! It is good! It is the best thing since sliced cheese. You should be honored to be allowed to be using it.
Again, what is actually said is that there's no such thing as a board which everyone loves and has all the features you desire. phpBB is a good setup. There are tweaks which need to be made to this forum to make it that much better, but that's an issue outside of phpBB and a matter of configuration. If we had chosen another board there would be someone whining just as loudly that they didn't like it. Like the saying goes, you can't please everyone. ;-)
Dear forum: Play nice ;-)

I'd just like to sum up my experiences :)
I came to the board and it looked and operated in a very poor manner :)

I wouldn't be surprised to find that someone was try to take a professional forum software package and make it look cute and cuddly - but they overdid it and it looked and operated badly :(

The default settings such as not auto-subscribing to threads that I'd taken part in was just schoolboy error :(

Once I'd found and adjusted the prosilver theme - things operate quite well :)

I don't quite understand why the prosilver theme colours haven't been raspbified since I would be flabbergasted to find that it was much more than a few lines in some css or a config file but what do I know :)

Abishur, just so you know...

I didn't make that up about at least one person raving about how great and wonderful (and "industry standard" - amazing how often people claim that the particular things that they like are industry standards) PHPboard is. There were at least a couple such responses when we first switched to this software (and, predictably, as you note, some people started complaining about it)

phpBB3? It's ok, it should allow mergers of sequential posts from one author. A nice paragraph engine. The admin is slightly complex, at least v2 was. Somehow the text entry box seems just one step away from disappearing in an improvement, yet form controls are endemic.
