RPi3 random total lockup

Sun Apr 03, 2016 6:45 pm

Hello folks, new RPi3 owner here.

Quite a quirky little board so far, noticed several glaring issues I am surprised were not addressed before production, especially the random in and out WiFi.

But my reason for the post, is that the system seems to suffer from complete hard lockups at random intervals. And I've experienced them on Raspbian, OSMC, and OpenElec, installed via NOOBS.

For example I can watch Kodi for hours without issue at times. And then there are times like right now where 15 minutes into turning the system on and using OpenElec has already resulted in a complete system lockup.

No combination of keys will do anything. SSH session times out and dies. Unit stops responding to pings on the local network. Complete freeze.

Wondering if anybody else has experienced this yet, and was also wondering how far off are we from an actual Pi3 compatible OS as this thing is definitely unreliable at best and certainly does not inspire confidence to be used for any real application thus far

Thanks for reading!

What are the temps reported just prior to lock up/freeze/crash? Are you seeing a red colored square upper right hand corner of screen? If so, get a heatsink/fan.

Is the red power LED constantly lit?
Unless specified otherwise my response is based on the latest and fully updated RPiOS Buster w/ Desktop OS.

Yeah, if you have the pi3, and that red light is blinking, then you have voltage issues. Ditto if you see a multi-rainbow colored box upper right corner of screen. if that is the case, you might want to get a better power supply (5.1v 2.5A or 5.25V 2.4A).

I'm not sure on the temps as I am always watching TV lately when it happens, but this is what I see. The system is still on, and frozen while I made the post from my tablet. There is a square of some sort it appears

What is the recommended method for monitoring temps? Although I am doing nothing strenuous and watching a very low quality video, my basement is chilly and its below freezing outside.. cant be temps

Thanks again

Its solid. I am using a very high quality Anker power supply. I have owned several previous RPi and all good.

The red light has never blinked, ever

Thanks guys

That looks like the low voltage warning square. It might be the cable from your power supply to the Raspberry Pi.

Hmmm interesting!

I know the PSU itself is excellent Anker quality but the cable is made by Aukey and they are very average.

So you think this may be it?

Thanks for your post

You need to look at the color of that square...

Orange/brownish/yellow//Red= overheating/throttling (get a heatsink/fan)

Multi-colored like a rainbow= insufficient voltage (get a better power supply/micro USB cable)

Did you click my imgur URL though? It doesn't fit any of your descriptions

The square is light cyan and blue, nothing like the orangish/brownish/yellowish/red you describe, nor multicolored like a rainbow

I did, and it is a very poor image. Can't tell what it is (your TV's colors may be altering it somewhat). My guess would be thermal.

Hi!

I had problems with my RPi3 with overheating, and frequent freezes. Turns out it was the blutooth causing it, once I stopped using bluetooth I could even overclock it without any problems at all. It's been on for days now and I regularly play some psp and ps1 games on it.

Hope that's some help for you!

Out of curiosity, what BT manager did you install? Blueman, or something else?

Yeah, it was blueman.

Interesting.

I also use blueman. No issues at all. I wasn't aware that the BT or WIFI was on the SoC (which is what the pi3 takes it's thermal readings from), Isn't it on the Broadcom BCM43438, which is on the bottom of the board?

It seems to mostly happen when using sixaxis controllers (Playstation 3 controller) over bluetooth. Plenty of others with the same problem in the thread below:

Could be a driver problem, although my sixaxis controller works fine over usb.

My Pi3 has had severe overheating issues. So much so that it has destroyed the data on the micro sdcard and on the card that was in the USB. And YES I have two heat sinks on it and I'm using the suggested 2.5amp power supply. It has little to no issue with watching video with omxplayer, and downloads video fine when using youtube-dl, no problems when converting files. However, when using firefox to watch youtube, it will heat to almost 100Celcius within a minute or two, and stays there until shutdown(which makes me think memory leak). I'm using Ubuntu MATE, since it was the fastest and most functional OS I installed(went through 5 or more OS).
I've been looking around, and there is some talk of various Pi3 having overheating problems. It seems pretty random at the moment, some are running fine at 60C, others running fine at 80C, and then a few like mine that are close to 100C. The operating temperature is throttled at 85C. I would be more comfortable if the results were a little more consistent, but that will take time and lots of trials to figure out.
I'm hoping this is a rare issue and plan on getting another Pi3 to see if I've just got a bad one. If that one has the same issue, then it's back to the Pi2 until the Pi3 gets sorted out.
