Rpi3 status leds

Sun Apr 03, 2016 1:03 am

Does anyone know why the red led is off with 1 usb PSU but on with another? I have just received a dual 2.1A + 1A usb PSU and although the Rpi3 runs fine with new PSU the red led is off? Need dual PSU as Rpi3 won't fully boot with my external USB long range wifi. So any ideas on status leds?
Thanks

The power supply is not sufficient.
If the red LED goes off then that means the supply voltage has dropped below about 4.65V. Note that at the same time a small rainbow box will appear at the top right of the screen. For the RPi and USB devices to function properly the voltage needs to stay between 4.75 and 5.25V.
Unless specified otherwise my response is based on the latest and fully updated RPiOS Buster w/ Desktop OS.

Get a better PSU. 5.1V 2.5A or 5.25V 2.4A

Thanks very much. That's what I thought it might be but couldn't find a definitive answer re RPI3.
The PSU I bought is supposed to be 5.1v 2.5A on one output and 5.1v 1A on the second output. Doesn't look like it is as advertised!!!!!

Any recommendations as ideally I want to power the RPi3, mouse, keyboard and an external USB wifi adapter (running wifi to wifi access point)?
Currently testing using a Samsung 700mA psu with an old usb2 hub that has a split usb cable so it plugs into the rpi and takes extra power from my pc usb port. That works fine.

Thanks for any suggestions.

The recommended power supply for a Pi 3 is this one, also available in white.

Also, have a look through this thread, particularly the discussion about the Pi's power supply leads.
I think you also may need to try out different leads between your Pi and your power supply.

Hope this helps,
Dave.

Thanks. Definitely PSU issue checked voltage and it's only 4.5v! Also I get the rainbow square in top right corner.
Thanks

Just ordered an 'Official 2.5Amp 5.1V psu' from CPC (farnell) for £7.14 delivered. Fingers crossed that will sort it.
Thanks

Cheers. They look good value but shipping to UK was a little expensive ;)
Hopefully your post will be useful to others, thanks.

Just an update. New 2.4A 5.1v Official PSU arrived yesterday, plugged it in and plugged in extra usb wifi and bingo no rainbow square and wifi is now rock solid. Been up about 24hrs and all good.

Now it is happily running as wifi to wifi access point.

So thanks very much for all your help.
