Should I wait for next gen

Fri Aug 10, 2012 3:30 am

I have been doing my research on the PI, and one guy said that there was going to be a next gen with a lot more additions.

Should I wait or will the next edition not be anytime soon. I hate buying things then a week later something better comes out lol.

It depends... There will be a Model A, if that has the functionality you want. There will certainly be improved software releases (but that's no reason to hold off getting the hardware). There will likely be a cased version, but cases are available.

It is unlikely that--at least within the next year--there will be any hardware revisions that you'd notice, and even if there were, it's $35 machine, so you can use now what there is now, and get what's available later when it comes out.

You're right, all I really wanted was to make sure that if I ordered it today, tomorrow they wouldn't be releasing a machine thats 10x better.

very unlikely you will buy one today and find a new one next week, it took a few years for this one to get properly developed, and because its all about price I cant imagine there being a new one until you can get faster CPU's and more ram for $25, I dont think they are interested in making a deluxe pi (there's a name).

Thankfully the Pi isn't like most other modern desktop hardware in that regard. You can 99.99% guarantee that if you buy a top end i7 chip, board, etc, now, it'll be out of date in as little as 6-12 months time.

Of course I'd argue that most people don't need the latest and greatest hardware, but that's a different discussion.

A lot of what could make Pi rock is software. The hardware is quite impressive in possibilities. Their is enough potential to go for years. A faster better Pi wouldn't make today's Pi without use. Faster means more power, more power means a bigger plug, or less USB sockets to cull power in the balance.

When more bang for the buck comes out, Pi classico will still do project homework, and decode 1080p 'get some glasses instead' mp4 vision. I'd love a bit of solarized, dithered, pixelation low power options. :D

Cheers Jacko

Actually, faster doesn't necessarily mean more power needed nowadays in Arm and GPU space. Technology to save power is getting better all the time.

There are some constants in life...

Next year's smartphone will be sexier
Next year's car will give better mileage
Next year's computer will have a faster processor
etc

It seems obvious that there might be a be a new version of the RPi some time in the future. But if you constantly wait for the next version of smartphone/car/computer, you will be stuck in paralysis forever.

With a smartphone or car, this is a long-term commitment because you may be locked into a smartphone contract or a car loan. But the RPi is so cheap that you will not lose too much sleep if a new version comes out next year.

"I have been doing my research on the PI, and one guy said that there was going to be a next gen with a lot more additions."

The quick answer is that guy is talking rubbish. There are no official plans for a "Pi 2". Lots of speculation. Expect a Pi 2 about the same time Apple release the iPhone 7s.

The Pi Model B meets all the stated requirements of the Foundation so there is no need to change it. Lots of people *want* more features for *their* applications but their applications are not important so they can continuing whistling. There is a huge, massive advantage to everyone using the same platform so it would be a disaster to create a new design within years of the Model B.

Why is it that with every technology you see these type of posts? Some technologies have a 10 month turn cycle. You will almost never have the latest and greatest. My six month old MacBook Pro is completely out of date now... Should I have waited? No, I needed a new laptop. If it does what you want today, buy it today. This is a $35.00 teaching toy that packs a ton of punch for the money. It's actually useable as computer! Tomorrow, whether tomorrow or two years from now will be different. That is a certainty when it comes to technology.

With something that is not needed such as the Pi, there is no rush to get it no matter how much it cost. My question was if something better was coming out in the immediate future, not 6 months from now.

I am in college so $35 bucks is kinda a big hit for me. So I could easily wait a few weeks if something was going to be give me better bang for my buck
