Light weight OS guide (where to find)

Thu Mar 17, 2016 1:49 am

I stumbled across a post either here or elsewhere pi related regarding light weight OS options for the pi.

One post suggested i think a script the removed a whole bunch of stuff from the standard Raspian install.

The other was i think a guide on how to get a nicely functional desktop from the Raspian lite install.

Has anyone else seen these and would anyone be able top point me to them?

Cheers.

Maybe this: https://github.com/debian-pi/raspbian-ua-netinst
or Diet Pi
Don't know if those have been updated to use Raspbian Jessie as Wheezy is EOL.

Here is a link about adding GUI to RJ lite
viewtopic.php?p=890408#p890408

Though I see no point in adding a GUI to RJ Lite vs using the full version.
Unless specified otherwise my response is based on the latest and fully updated RPiOS Buster w/ Desktop OS.

How big is the full version vs the lite version with X? In the least, in the lite version, you should be able to decide which X applications you want.

I'll take a look at your links, thanks for posting.

I just want a desktop OS on a Raspberry pi without all the crap that comes with it on Raspian.
Scratch, Wolfram, Python, variants of each and branding.

Would be great if there was an education version, and a plain version.

If you have a Raspberry Pi 2 or 3 maybe: https://ubuntu-pi-flavour-maker.org

How about archlinux arm (alarm)...?

From the website
Simple

We are a port of Arch Linux, which aims for simplicity and full control to the end user. We provide a light-weight base structure that allows you to shape the system to your needs.
After installation - Pi2, you are left with a barebones base system. You then add what you need: gui, apps, etc, etc.

NB: be prepared to get your hands dirty. In the process you will learn a lot about the under-the-hood-Linux stuff. The forums are somewhat lively and there's even an Arch forum right here.

Alarm is a flexible distro and fast. I boot (to tty) between 6 and 9 seconds. Have fun!
