Not enough power?

Mon Mar 14, 2016 6:09 pm

Hi, I am Bo Stanley from Sweden.
I run my Pi3 Mod B very nicely with NOOBS. So I wanted to try another distribution. I selected Win 10 IoT.

When I tried to run it (same power supply) I got the colored square on the screen (signaling weak power supply) and it would not start. Irritating!
So I decided to try Ubuntu Snappy, BUT IT GAVE THE SAME RESULT!

Back to NOOBS and it runs perfectly (same power supply).

Has any one seen this? What can I do?

Power use depends on how busy the CPU and GPU are, or--to put it another way--how hard the system is being driven.

In order to get a better idea of what your problem is...What is the rating of your PSU? (That is, is it rated for the power the board is going to need?) What is the wire gauge and length of your USB power cable? (Is it long, thin and flexible or is it short, think and stiff? This will--in part--determine if the power provided by the PSU can get to the Pi.) Third...what peripheral devices are being powered by the Pi? (Mainly...what is plugged into the USB ports and what are the power requirements of those devices?)

NOOBS is an installer / chooser and NOT an Operating System..
Rather than negativity think outside the box !

The Pi 3 needs more power than other versions. You need 2.5A.

Maybe... The Pi3B can only use that much current of the high current (1.2A) option for USB is enabled in config.txt. Without that, it should top out at 1.9A. However, that *does* mean that you need a GOOD 2A PSU and a good USB cable.

The RPi 3B hass the USB 1200mA set as standard setting :D

Or, more accurately, there is no appliable config.txt option for RPi3 to increase (or decrease) the USB current limit trip level - it's permanently wired in hardware to a nominal 1200mA.
