Is there any way to run Windows XP either as a real or as a VM machine on Pi3 ?

Not possible.
You may be able to run some X86 stuff with Exagear.

Yeah, that would be a great thing to do since I still run an old XP machine with no problems.
If I had the money, I would put a simple board together like the Raspberry to run a 32 bit XP, you really don't need 64 bit, that is just a waste unless your moving movies around.
