Power goes on/off when pi moves

Fri Mar 04, 2016 3:24 am

My pi 2 has the power go on and off if the case is moved in the slightest way. Is my power source bad? It's a Vilros kit I got from Amazon. Do I need to get a better power supply?
Thanks

Is the power supply inside the case? Obviously whatever is causing the problem has to in some way be connected to the movement and I wonder if it's something other than the wall wart part of a power supply, given it is so far away from the actual pi. Could it be the connector, either the power supply side or the pi side? I'd try just slightly touching that and see if it restarts. Of course doing all this isn't really that great for the electronics, so I'd want to find out what the deal was without too much messing around.

Mine had same problem. Loose power connector. Just pressed the connector on the pi a little bit (with my teeth, certainly not the best method) and now it sits firm.

Sounds like a bad power source, can you see how much voltage it is sending through?

From what I have seen/heard it only puts out 2.5v.

I would try a better 5v power source. :D

Sounds like a sketchy USB power cable. I have also seen cases and cables that just don't work together well. Normally the micro end of the usb is short with a little bulkier of a shell, and the hole in the case is small enough to keep it from inserting good enough. Seen it on cell phone cases, tablet covers, and pi cases. Make sure the cable ends don't have too much wiggle.

I don't think it is a voltage or current problem , sounds like a faulty lead or loose connection
It is one of them problems that is solved by elimination .. Part of the learning curve
Start by removing the Pi from the case, Only you can solve this problem , by trying each

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I removed the case that came with the Vilros kit and now the power supply micro USB seems to seat itself better. I'm able to pick up the Pi and move it around without the power cutting out like it did before. Turned out to be any easy and free fix.
Thanks again!

I am having the same issue with my Vilros starter kit. Removing the side of the case does not fix the problem. I have been able to keep the pi powered by ever so slightly unseating the micro-usb and angling the pull of a cord in a certain direction. I am not sure whether the problem lies with the power adapter or the Pi itself. I'm planning on e-mailing Vilros today to see what solution they recommend. It's a bit depressing to have a product that "kind of" works.
