Integrated Bluetooth not woking in RPi 3

Wed Mar 02, 2016 12:57 pm

Hello.

I am trying to test the integrated bluetooth service with my new Raspberry Pi 3 and it doesn't work.

Here's what I do, in bold, and the responses. Note: it happens in an updated RetroPie, but also in an updated Raspbian.

pi@retropie:~ $ sudo service bluetooth status
● bluetooth.service - Bluetooth service
Loaded: loaded (/lib/systemd/system/bluetooth.service; enabled)
Active: inactive (dead)
Docs: man:bluetoothd(8)
pi@retropie:~ $ sudo service bluetooth start
Job for bluetooth.service failed. See 'systemctl status bluetooth.service' and 'journalctl -xn' for details.
pi@retropie:~ $ sudo service bluetooth status
● bluetooth.service - Bluetooth service
Loaded: loaded (/lib/systemd/system/bluetooth.service; enabled)
Active: failed (Result: exit-code) since Wed 2016-03-02 12:46:04 UTC; 4s ago
Docs: man:bluetoothd(8)
Process: 1108 ExecStart=/usr/lib/bluetooth/bluetoothd (code=exited, status=203/EXEC)
Main PID: 1108 (code=exited, status=203/EXEC)

Mar 02 12:46:04 retropie systemd[1]: bluetooth.service: main process exited...EC
Mar 02 12:46:04 retropie systemd[1]: Failed to start Bluetooth service.

I believe you need:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install pi-bluetooth
Hope this helps,
Dave.

I'm guessing bluez-firmware is missing. Pi-bluetooth should fix that.

As an alternative to blueman, bluetoothctl is a command line tool which works quite well and is already installed. I've found blueman to be very slow, glitchy and, in some parts, unusable.

Thank you so much: now it works on RetroPie! I have not tested in Raspbian yet, but all i wanted to do is play with my PS3 wireless controller. "sudo apt-get install pi-bluetooth" did the trick, so mission accomplished (I think you could mark it as solved).

I am using osmc and if enter:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install bluetooth-pi
it returns

Code: Select all

E: Unable to locate package bluetooth-pi
any idea which source I need to add to "/etc/apt/sources.list"?

Best to ask on the osmc forum, but I believe osmc needs to update some BT packages before BT works on the Pi3.

It's in the regular Raspbian Jessie repo; not sure how that works with OSMC. You might be better off with the old

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install bluetooth
But best to ask on the OSMC forum.

To have pi-bluetooth package and others, I had to manually add this lines to /etc/apt/sources.list :

Code: Select all

deb http://archive.raspberrypi.org/debian/ jessie main staging
deb-src http://archive.raspberrypi.org/debian/ jessie main staging
Then, following the guide on https://www.pi-supply.com/make/fix-rasp ... th-issues/, had done:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade -y
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade -y
sudo apt-get install pi-bluetooth
But bluetooth only started to work after installing raspberrypi-sys-mods: (somebody told to, but I do not remember where)

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install raspberrypi-sys-mods
sudo usermod -G bluetooth -a volumio
After all this, the BT seems to be working. Check via: systemctl

Code: Select all

systemctl status hciuart.service
systemctl status bluetooth.service

I asked this same question over on the FPP site, but this looks like a more appropriate place to post this question (so sorry if it looks like I am shotgunning the question).

Sorry for the bother and here is another Raspberry Pi/FPP rookie question. Got my new Pi 3 yesterday and loaded FPP & got it running without much difficulty. Can access the Pi via wireless or wired (ethernet). However, I want to use bluetooth to play audio but can not figure out how to get BT to work. Whenever I do anything to attempt to access bluetooth (apt-get <anything bluetooth> via the command line), I get the alert ""e: Unable to locate package pi-bluetooth".

I have seen this same error referenced a lot on the internet but have not found anywhere that definitively provides a solution. Do you think the recommendations in this post are applicable to my problem?

I have tried all the apt-get updates/upgrades etc, with no luck. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Perhaps the answer is already on this site and I just missed it. I have not yet tried editing as suggesting here, as I don't want to needlessly screw anything else up.

After Googling 'FPP' ("The Falcon Player is a standalone sequence player allowing playback of your sequences without a dedicated PC."), I still don't know what it is, or what a 'sequence' is. Specifically, no idea what OS it uses. Apparently, not Raspbian. You could edit the sources.list to include the Raspbian repo, but no telling if it will play nice with FPP. Best to ask the FPP guys.

Hi, I appear to be getting a similar error with my RPi 3 running retropie. I keep getting "failed to start configure bluetooth modems connected by uart" and "failed to start bluetooth service".

I have tried the whole:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade -y
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade -y
sudo apt-get install pi-bluetooth
sudo apt-get install raspberrypi-sys-mods
And reinstalling them, but nothing has seemed to fix my issue.

I have two RPi3 controllers, and it works on one but not the other; same SD Card was used in both. This all starting after doing an update all packages on the pi that doesn't work (which is why I assume it is not a hardware thing). Any other suggestions or ideas would be really appreciated.
