Red Power Light

Sun Feb 28, 2016 4:02 pm

Please help, we are complete novices, have just bought a Raspberry Pi for our 9 year old, and are having problems setting it up.
When you plug in the HDMI cable, we keep getting the red power light come on, we know the screens work as we have been able to get the laptop to work through the cable. We have tried using different screens but still get the same problem. We have tried re-formatting the SD card but still keep getting the same problem - HELP - please can we have responses in simple terms as we don't understand anything to do with coding yet - Thanking you in advance

1/ Which model of Pi is it?

2/ Are you also plugging a suitable 5V power supply (rated at 2A or more ideally) into the microUSB socket to power the Pi? It's not possible to power one via HDMI.

A Pi won't boot from a formatted SD card. It needs an operating system (OS) on it of some kind for it to do anything.
Pi2B Mini-PC/Media Centre: ARM=1GHz (+3), Core=500MHz, v3d=500MHz, h264=333MHz, RAM=DDR2-1200 (+6/+4/+4+schmoo). Sandisk Ultra HC-I 32GB microSD card on '50=100' OCed slot (42MB/s read) running Raspbian/KODI16, Seagate 3.5" 1.5TB HDD mass storage.

Is the SD card currently empty, ie, formatted? If so, you need to download an OS for it. Raspbian Jessie would be a good starting place...

You will need access to a working PC to do this. Preferably a Windows machine as it makes the process simpler for a novice.

What happens? You say the red leds comes on? If so, this is good :) . That meas your power supply is good.
Does your Pi boot?

When you installed NOOBS on the card, did you copy the folder itself over or just the contents of the folder to the card?

If you view the card in Windows File Explorer, it should look something like this...

When you formatted the SD card, was this after a previous failed attempt at booting NOOBS from it? If so, you may need to use the official SDFormatter tool linked to in the installation guide (with format size adjustment set to ON) to regain access to the entire card then put NOOBS on it again.
