External HDD not powering up?

Fri Feb 26, 2016 8:55 pm

I've got a 1TB Toshiba 2.5" canivo basics external HDD which works fine with my laptop and Xbox One, but when I plug it into my pi 2 the HDD sounds like it's powering up but cutting out after a second or so. Is there a way around this? All I want to use the HDD for is viewing videos/music etc.. thanks

Try adding the line...

Code: Select all

max_usb_current=1
...anywhere in your config.txt file.

If you need talking through how to do this, just ask.
Pi2B Mini-PC/Media Centre: ARM=1GHz (+3), Core=500MHz, v3d=500MHz, h264=333MHz, RAM=DDR2-1200 (+6/+4/+4+schmoo). Sandisk Ultra HC-I 32GB microSD card on '50=100' OCed slot (42MB/s read) running Raspbian/KODI16, Seagate 3.5" 1.5TB HDD mass storage.

Worked perfectly thanks man. Should I get something like a powered USB hub or anything for future use?

You're welcome. I wouldn't bother unless you have a specific need for one for something else. Just check that the Pi PSU isn't getting too warm running the HDD and you should be fine.
