Webcam robot power solution

Thu Feb 25, 2016 3:12 pm

I want to make a raspberry pi robot with a usb webcam attached that is live streaming to another computer. I would like it to be wireless obviously so that it can reach further away than the restraints of the cable. what would be the best and cheapest way of powering it as well as the usb webcam without being tethered to the wall??

A battery

Sorry but without more information its hard to answer. The type of battery depends on the robot, the pi and the connected peripherals and their power requirements. Batteries can be a standard AA pack , a phone battery all the way up to car batteries. It really does depend on the power required. The voltage for pretty much any battery can be fixed to 5v using a small circuit so it is all about the current needed

Use one of those "USB power packs" which are available in a variety of sizes, colours etc, to suit every robot. They usually contain between 1 and 3 lithium cells. The bigger, better ones can easily run a Pi and a few peripherals for a few hours.

Might be worth looking at using 2 batteries. One, a mobile phone / tablet power pack for the pi. The others could be a load of AA cells, D cells or something else but basically a separate power supply for the motors, otherwise you might struggle with brown outs when your motors come on.
