Pi 2 model B memory expantion?

Mon Feb 22, 2016 1:35 pm

Hi you all,

I'm going to try and build a minecraft server from my Pi 2 model B so my sons can play minecraft with there friends in there own world. I found some good tutorials to do this so no help needed on that part....yet! :D
However....as I read posts in multiple forums about this I keep comming a cross the fact that the internal memory just can keep up with the game. There for I'd like to expand the 1024 MB internal memory if that is possible?
Is there an saperate GIO pin module for this? Or can I connect 2 Pi 2 model B's together to achieve this?
Hope you can help me on this subject.

With kind regards,
Mike

No, you cannot expand the internal memory in that way.

The only way you can make more memory available is to add some swap (either on a file or as a partition) on your SD card or a USB storage device. That will be horribly slow to use.

Thanks for your fast replay rpdom! :D
That's not what I was hoping for but I'll have to make the best of it then. ;)

About that file swapping: you say that it is slow. Did you mean file swapping is slow it's not recommended or using a USB memory stick/HDD is slow that way but swapping on the micro SD card is fast enough for the task?
I have a 8GB micro SD card that I use for the Pi 2 model B. So I could use about 4GB for swapping.
Could that make it easier for the Pi running the Minecraft game in server mode?

No matter what you use for swapping, it's still going to be horribly slow compared to system RAM.
Pi2B Mini-PC/Media Centre: ARM=1GHz (+3), Core=500MHz, v3d=500MHz, h264=333MHz, RAM=DDR2-1200 (+6/+4/+4+schmoo). Sandisk Ultra HC-I 32GB microSD card on '50=100' OCed slot (42MB/s read) running Raspbian/KODI16, Seagate 3.5" 1.5TB HDD mass storage.

For a server you probably don't need very much RAM allocated to the GPU. IIRC, the minimum it can be set to is 16MB so you might consider checking your Pi to see what the allocation is and if you can free some GPU RAM for the CPU.
