According to the Debian website the next release (9) is codenamed "stretch". As usual, no release date is mentioned, but it usually takes about 18 months for Debian to get from one release to the next. Calculating from April 2015 that would put the next release by the end of 2016.

I believe it took about 6 months for Raspbian to catch up with Debian Jessie, which would result in an expected release of Raspbian Stretch in the first half of 2017.

These dates are highly speculative of course.

Debian Jessie 8 is only 12 months old and is supported for a total of 3 years, so yes likely sometine in 2018 Raspbian Stretch will be released.

Raspbian has a Stretch release in the repository, for anyone who is keen enough to try it, but there won't be any official images from the RPF until Stretch becomes the Debian Stable release.

The raspbian repositories have a stretch suite which is following Debian stretch. You can upgrade to it if you are brave/foolhardy enough.

At arround the time of the stretch freeze I will advise the raspberry pi foundation to start work on forward-porting the stuff they build on top of raspbian to a stretch base. How long it will take them to do it this time round I have no idea. They jumped from Debian squeeze armel to raspbian wheezy some time before Debian made wheezy stable. On the other hand with Jessie it took them much longer, partly because of a nasty issue involving systemd and one of their custom init scripts.

With more experience and being better able to estimate how long these takes, I don't think the stretch upgrade will take quite as long or start as late.
