Resizing the SD card partition (Jessie)

Sat Jan 16, 2016 8:46 pm

Hi all,

So I recently bought another PI with an 8GB SD Card with Noobs on and installed Jessie. I've loving it so far but in my haste I don't think I thought it through and I'm quite low on disk spare on the SD Card. I'm also using some network shares but bottom line is I'd like more space on the SD card so I'm thinking about getting a 32GB one.

I know you can use Win32DiskImager to copy the existing image and I'll be able to get that onto a new card but... how do I expand the partition easily to expand to use the full 32GB card? Will gparted be ok which I believe is a GUI?

TIA

A USB stick of external HDD may be another option for you.

Yes, gparted can resize partitions. ext4 can be live-resized, so you could clone the 8G onto a 32G, boot it, install gparted, resize the partitions, resize ext4.....

Too many hoops, too many things that could go wrong. personally I'd start with a fresh install.

You can't. Not "easily". NOOBS was designed to be easy to use to install an Operating System in the first instance, not to support subsequent changes.

The partitioning scheme is documented here: https://github.com/raspberrypi/noobs/wi ... -explained

Note that the author starts by saying:
The multiple partitions that NOOBS divides your SD card into (at least 5) can be quite overwhelming and confusing.
That's not to say that it can't be done. But I don't think it can be described as 'easy'. So I agree with the previous reply:

with NOOBS 1.5.x the partition layout is slightly different as documented there (document is outdated)

There is nothing apparently relevant in the Issues tracker for that page. If you know the details, could you add an Issue to alert the rest of us?
