Intentions and possibilites

Mon Jan 11, 2016 1:16 am

My intention is to purchase RPi components with the hope of assembling a small computer capable of running a web browser and an installation of Kodi.

My understanding is that Kodi will run on just about anything without trouble. Outstanding!

The web browser streaming is another animal, it seems. There is some conflicting guidance given at viewtopic.php?f=91&t=83372&p=651745#p664205. From what I can understand from that source, Gnash is not an option, and PepperFlash is no longer supported by Google.

I would very much like to have my Pi display streaming content from any web page. Is this possible, or not very likely?

Thank you for reading,

Should I have posted this question in the Media Centres project forum?

Forget about Flash and any workarounds it ranges from barely usable to not worth the effort, officially Abode have killed it on the OSes running on ARM Architecture. ;)

Raspbian Jessie with KODi installed works very well..

Browser streaming requies a workaround and kweb is very good and utilises youtube-dl which supports many sites

Last but not least DRM is not supported as the RPi does not meet the requirements of ""Secure Platform"" so services like Netflix are unavailable..

You can report your own post to the moderators and ask to get it moved. ( I think )

If you are looking to stream video from *ANY* web-site then I think there is no "good" solution for the Raspberry Pi, there is such a mess with flash-players Html5, mpeg4 etc. on the web. Hopefully they will ALL get rid of flash soon.

For the big streaming sites like youtube, vimeo, twitch, etc there are plugins for Kodi so you dont need to open a browser.
You should check if the streaming services you are interested in are already covered by kodi-plugin.

Here is an example of a website that I like that has a schedule of live streams from three countries : http://www.livemass.net/LiveMass/liveHD.html

The streams are displayed in Adobe flash player.

Am I correct in thinking that the ARM architecture of RPi is going to prevent me from receiving and displaying that streamed content?

Thank you, fruitoftheloom. There is a fair bit of content in your reply that I would need to absorb. I posted in the 'beginners' section for good reason. :D

Correct. You can even report other peoples posts and ask the same if you feel it necessary. The moderation team will decide if the request is a valid one and act accordingly.
