Sound on Raspberry Pi

Hello,

I am having problems with getting my Raspberry Pi B+ to get sound. I use a DVI-HDMI cable for my Dell DVI monitor. I hear it is impossible to get audio through DVI, but the audio output (headphone jack) doesn't work either. Does anyone know how to fix this problem?

You'll probably need to

amixer cset numid=3 1

It used to default 0 (auto) but lately it defaults to 2 (HDMI).
If that works, you can make it permanent with raspi-config, advanced options.

Please excuse the self-plug, but ....

if you can't be bothered remembering all those amixer commands etc, then may I respectfully recommend PiSound at https://github.com/NormanDunbar/PiSound which lets you do stuff like:

sound headphones

or

Code: Select all

sound hdmi

and other useful things like setting the volume:

sound 60%

And reading the current volume:

Code: Select all

sound volume
60%

And so on. It's a simple python script, one of my first ever, and it works fine - so far!

After using the nano editor to eliminate the comment # on #hdmi_drive=2 in my config.txt file saving and then rebooting the sound finally plays thought the HDMI monitor speakers. I had to manually change directories to the Boot directory before I could modify the config.txt file. Using the Sonic Pi example files as the test. Attempting to modify the "RASPI-CONFIG and Advanced Options, Audio did not work.

The sudo amixer cset numid=3 1 did work. Thanks!
