Raspberry Pi 2 Model B Power issues

Wed Dec 30, 2015 5:23 pm

I recently bought a Pi 2 Model B, the first thing I did was install Raspbian Jessie on to my 64GB micro sd and booted up my raspberry pi using it. All went well, the pi booted up fine, next I conneted to my wireless network using my Edimax wifi dongle, I have owned the original raspberry pi in the past so I am slightly experienced doing general Pi stuff. I connected to my home network using the GUI that is included on the task bar in raspbian, although when I launched my browser I had no access to the internet (have tried on ethernet as well).

Now that I have laid down the foundation I will explain why I have been led to think that power is the issue. When I boot up the Pi I temporarily have access to the internet, for example, I will launch the browser and navigate to google.com, and it will work but after a refresh I will no longer connect. I knew that my USB keyboard and mouse were using a lot of power so I had intentions of getting my Pi set up headless although I can't connect to the internet so this can't be done at the moment. When I unplug my keyboard I have access to the internet for a bit longer than I would previously, this backs up the fact that power is the issue.

I have used 2 different power supplies, one 5V/1000mA which I soon realized that wasn't enough. So I switched to the charger for my galaxy tablet, which was 5V/2000mA (usb cable plugged into a power jack thing) to my surprise this did not fix my issue. My next thought was to try a powered USB hub, unfortunately I couldn't find the DC cable for my old hub that came with my first raspberry pi. I purchased a new powered hub from amazon today but I am not sure if this will fix my issue.

I was wondering if based on my symptoms any more experienced Pi users can tell me if this powered USB hub will fix my internet issues?

Thanks a ton, and sorry for the long post.

Are you able to measure the voltage ?

I thought keyboards / mice were fairly low-power devices. Or are you using wireless ones ? If so, do you have any proper ones you can substitute ?

I'm still on first-generation pi, but I think I read somewhere recently that the red on-board led will do something (go out or blink, perhaps) if it detects the power supply voltage dropping below a safe minimum.

There are two "low-voltage warning" mechanisms for the B+ and P2B:
1) The red PoWeR led flickering
2) A small "RGB icon" (similar to the RGB splashscreen during first boot) appearing at the top right of the display.
The low-voltage threshold is, IIRC, 4.6V.
A common cause of low-voltage problems can be a poor quality (ie. one that uses thin wires etc.) uUSB connecting cable between the PSU/Charger and the Pi.
Still running Raspbian Jessie or Stretch on some older Pi's (an A, B1, 2xB2, B+, P2B, 3xP0, P0W, 2xP3A+, P3B+, P3B, B+, and a A+) but Buster on the P4B's. See: https://www.cpmspectrepi.uk/raspberry_pi/raspiidx.htm

I am using what I thought to be fairly low powered peripherals, they are both wired and are about as basic as they come, I don't have anything to measure the voltage with but I will check the red power light

I have not seen the on screen indicator, but I will check the red light
