Composite video askew and flickery

Wed Dec 09, 2015 6:39 am

Hi,

I just got my Raspberry Pi 2 and I've hooked it up to my old Hisense television via A/V cables. The picture is very flickery, and sometimes even scrambles when there is too much motion on screen. Also, the display is way off to the side, and I've played around with the overscan to no effect. I've included some photos of what's happening for reference.

When I run /opt/vc/bin/tvservice -s I get the following: state: 0x80001 [PAL 16:9], 720x576 @50.00Hz, interlaced

in /boot/config.txt I've tried every setting for sdtv_mode -- PAL seems to look the best, although not that great. And I've tried different settings for the framebuffer sizes, and aspect ratios -- It makes a difference, but still doesn't put the desktop in the correct place on the screen.

Also the results of running vcgencmd get_config int are:

arm_freq=900
audio_pwm_mode=1
audio_sdm_mod_order=2
config_hdmi_boost=5
disable_commandline_tags=2
disable_l2cache=1
disable_splash=1
emmc_pll_core=1
force_eeprom_read=1
force_pwm_open=1
framebuffer_height=720
framebuffer_ignore_alpha=1
framebuffer_swap=1
framebuffer_width=1280
hdmi_force_cec_address=65535
hdmi_ignore_hotplug=1
lcd_framerate=60
over_voltage_avs=0x1b774
overscan_bottom=32
overscan_left=42
overscan_right=32
overscan_top=32
pause_burst_frames=1
program_serial_random=1
sdram_freq=450
sdtv_aspect=3
sdtv_mode=2
second_boot=1
temp_limit=85

What else can I do? Would different cables make a difference? The ones I bought were pretty cheap.

Thanks all!

Looks alike a bad cable/connector, missing ground.

Looks more like a bad cable with ground and signal swapped over.

Looks like a perfectly good cable for the purpose it was designed. :)

However that purpose was to be plugged in to a socket which has some of the signals on different contacts than those on RPis. :(

Thanks all. I was working under the assumption that the swapped ground would give no output at all, so this is good info. I'll order the correct cable tomorrow (I'm in a part of the world where it's a little difficult to just go buy one), and I'll post an update!

SOLVED: Composite video askew and flickery

Fri Dec 25, 2015 8:12 am

A new cable solved the problem. Just in case anyone finds themselves in China trying to put all this together, this was the cable I bought and successfully used:

https://item.taobao.com/item.htm?spm=a1 ... hskcrn3edb

I had to switch the white and the red to get the correct audio output, because it is wired for an iPod, but it works!
