+12V on GPIO

Mon Dec 07, 2015 10:13 am

I have made a custom hat for my B+ and (without going further into detail) it so happens that GPIO14 is connected to a pin on my hat on which I have a +12V supply. I am not intending to use GPIO14 but I was wondering if there are any potential problems with having +12V sitting on this port, or if I need to avoid this physical connection? Would it make sense to configure GPIO14 as an output (or input for that matter), or is it irrelevant?

Thanks,

+12V passed anywhere on the GPIO will kill your RPi

Yes, it is a problem.

You will probably damage the GPIO circuit for that pin, and maybe all of the other pins too.

You may also damage the CPU and other circuitry.

I suggest that you break the 12V trace leading to that pin on your PCB.

Are you familiar with the "magic smoke" theory of electronics?

Your hat sounds like a great introduction to the field.

Thank you for your answers. I guess I will cut the physical connection between +12V on my hat an the GPIO :) It's really not a big deal, I was just wondering.
