Power from USB speakers input?

Fri Dec 04, 2015 9:31 pm

Hello,

I am new to the rPi world, haven't bought one yet but thinking about it for a simple project. Sorry for jumping straight in with a question but I hope someone will know the answer to this.

I was thinking of buying an rPi 2 to act as an airplay receiver but with the release of the Zero I wonder if it's possible for it to draw power from a pair of USB speakers (USB input that is, they are mains powered) via a USB to 2x MicroUSB splitter going into the data and power connections on the Zero? Can the power even flow in that direction? What are the chances of this working?

Thanks for reading,

-Steven

that worked on the origonal pi, and could be made to work on any pi, if the new ones try to prevent it.

IF the speakers provide 5V out of their USB input, THEN a single USB cable from the Pi0 data socket will carry Data (Pi0->speakers) and Power (speakers->Pi0). It won't work on B+ or 2B, which won't allow power input through the USB outputs. I think A and A+ will work, B models were mixed.
A splitter cable will work on all models.
