Wheezy upgrade to Jessie on 3.5inch LCD

Wed Dec 02, 2015 7:46 am

So I just tried doing an upgrade on from wheezy to Jessie on my waveshare 3.5inch LCD (a) shotpear screen. And it did the upgrade. There were several man-db files that weren't allowed do to there not being enough space on the device. But my raspberry pi 2 model b still loads up but when it comes to going to the home screen, it stops at a black screen that you can add input on. But goes nowhere else. I got the .img from linuxconfig.org/rasbian-gnu-linux-upgrade-from-wheezy-to-rasbian-jessie-8. What do I do. Plz help.

You can or you can't 'add input on' ? This needs further explanation. Is anything shown on the display or not. It could be that the new image is attempting to boot to XWINDOWS, but the OS isn't configured to direct output to the display. So if this is possibly the case, you could SSH in to the Pi, run raspi-config and choose Boot to Console in the Boot Options menu.

The black screen that comes up CAN BE typed on. It does no good to type on it. I've typed command and does nothing. I can fill that page with anything I want because it does nothing. Im honestly getting the opinion that the jessie I found is too large to properly run on my 3.5inch LCD.

I've also noticed that even on the properly working wheezy, I can't boot into noobs. And I've read, somewhere on this forum page, that you can boot into ssh from noobs. Well, I'm assuming, without the option of booting noobs, you can't boot to ssh. And its like this with both wheezy and Jessie on my sd card for my 3.5inch LCD. Yes I have multiple memory card with seperate operating systems loaded.

Using NOOBS is adding extra complexity and may not be compatible with fbtft (I don't know, I never use NOOBS). No OS is "too large" for your display. It may be too large for your sd card though. I would "research waveshare 3.5 Jessie" and configure from the latest Raspbian Jessie (or Lite if you don't want XWINDOWS, and/or your SD card is <4gb).
Here's an example of how my 2.8" displays are configured, but you will need to see if you have a dtoverlay files for your particular display :
