Beginner with bluetooth Ipad keyboard only, will that work?

Mon Nov 23, 2015 11:01 pm

Hello, I am an absolute beginner and I have just bought a RPi. I quickly realised that my keyboard and my mouse were not USB so I am blocked as soon as I need to start selecting things on the screen. I have an Ipad bluetooth keyboard as well. What are my options, outside of buying a USB keyboard and a USB mouse?

1. Buying USB adaptors for my keyboard and my mouse? (is that worth it?)
2. Could my logitech Ipad bluetooth keyboard do the trick, even when the RPi still needs to be configured?

Re 2. This just came to my mind - I have a USB cable with this bluetooth keyboard, for charging purpose - could that turn my bluetooth keyboard into a USB keyboard if I plug it to my RPi? Or is charging through USB a totally different thing, and has nothing to do with communicating through USB?

Thanks in advance,

Bruno

1. Some of them work. But, don't go for the really cheap ones which are just a passive plug and socket and rely on stuff in the keyboard to switch between USB and PS/2 interfaces. You need an active adaptor. I use one I bought years ago.

2. Try it? It won't hurt and it might work.

You can also use SSH from your computer/mac to connect remotely to a raspberry pi. ;)

Buy the cheapest, cruddiest, least fancy wired USB keyboard and the cheapest, cruddiest, least fancy USB wired mouse and you'll have most success. This is a case where cheapest is best.

Hello!

I have just realised that, even though I had read your replies, I had never reverted. Apologises for this, and thanks all for your feedback!

I finally went for the option proposed by Dougie - I bought a very basic USB keyboard and a very basic USB mouse. That did the trick. (was pretty sure I would get it wrong if I was buying USB adaptor, following rpdom comments)

I tried the option suggested by Laurens a few weeks after as well - remotely connecting to the Pi with my computer - loved it!

Thanks again,

Bruno
