3G / 4G USB modem ALMOST working

Thu Jul 26, 2012 10:39 pm

I have a Sierra Wireless 250U from Ting.com (a Sprint MVNO in the US). I can get it connected with the Linux install instructions on Sprint's website (page 24), with the tweak that Stupid Mode = 1 and not yes. Here's the rub: this only works either as the very first command run after reboot (and not on tty1... hit Ctrl+Alt+F3 or something), or over SSH. While it's connected over SSH, any keyboard activity directly to the RasPi is blocked. Also, to reconnect, I have to physically unplug the modem then plug it back in. Crazy, right?
Getting everything installed:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install wvdial
sudo nano /etc/wvdial.conf
wvdial.conf contents:

Code: Select all

[Dialer Defaults]
Modem = /dev/ttyUSB0
Baud = 460800
Init1 = ATZ
Init2 = ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0
ISDN = 0
Modem Type = USB Modem
Phone = #777
Username = ''
Password = ''
Carrier Check = no
Stupid Mode = 1
To connect, run:

Code: Select all

sudo wvdial
I can then log in using the ppp0 IP address from wvdial/pppd (or ifconfig) so I know it's connected and working, but with all the caveats above.

This is all using a blank Raspian image that I imaged today - the only thing I installed was wvdial and htop to check memory.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
