Newbie wants to learn about Ham Radio with PI

Thu Nov 05, 2015 12:46 am

I am new to Pi and trying to learn everything I can so I can use in in Ham Radio. The only programming I have done was back in the Navy using 1's and 0's. served from 1977 to 1986 in the submarine service. Now I am a disable retired military. So any places I can go to learn more. My mind is not like it was back then. So it likes a new kid learning.
Thanks
David

Hi David,

Welcome to the world of Raspberry Pi.

Can I suggest that you change the title of the thread to something more descriptive (perhaps "Newbie wants to learn about Ham Radio with PI" by editing the title in your original post. This will help draw the attention of the most interested people (I suspect PeterO will be along shortly).

I use Pi2 with a TNC-Pi kit (Coastal Chipworks, John W2FS) to run Xastir.
Xastir is a graphical package for displaying APRS stations.
Very useful for tracking mobile stations on RAYNET events.
It has been my custom to use Xeyes

If you was resident in the UK, how far away could you communicate with a simple setup?

I live in a flat which is 3 stories and has a metal framed balcony. How far could be communicated if this was used as an aerial?
