File system is suddenly read only?

Mon Nov 02, 2015 1:41 pm

Hi guys.

I'm using the official raspbian wheezy image (kernel version 3.18) on my Raspberry Pi model B. I set everything up and now run it as a headless server and SSH into the machine to do stuff. Everything ran just fine for about a week, but now I have problems. I didn't change anything inbetween.

I now get error messages on practically everything but navigating through the folder structures. From my understanding I can't do anything that requires writing to the file system. I can't create folders, can't edit files, can't even reboot or run apt-get. For the first two, I get the error message "read-only file system". I checked for the ro flag in /etc/fstab, but there is none.

I've had the exact same problem before, which I "resolved" by pulling the cord. However, the raspberry pi wouldn't boot afterwards and I had to set everything up again. I'd like to avoid doing this on a weekly basis.

Any ideas?

You'll need to use another Linux system to fsck your broken filesystem.

Easiest way to do that is with another microSD booted in your RPi and the broken microSD mounted in a USB SDCard reader.

Or it may have done a Sandisk and gone read-only (ie. dead) 'for the protection of your data' (or a very similar phrase to that)
