Dependability

Fri Oct 23, 2015 3:26 am

How solid is the Rasp Pi for running 27/4 365? I made a camera as part of the door station and built a weather proof casing for it. Reason I ask is because one of my systems running OSMC has shut down a few times. Could be software issues, could be since Emby is the backbone - could be I over clocked it without a fan and had it on an amp. It has the 5v 2a power supply. If I install this as part of the door station will it be a solid protocol to run 24/7? If not I would have to figure out another way to do things.

The Pi is usually stable for 24/7 running. I've been running a few for over a year now, controlling important things. The only time they've been down is when I was rebooting them (or in one case, pulled the wrong plug  ).

Power issues are the usual culprits, inadequate PSU/poor quality power cable/failed PSU.

Overclocking can cause instability on some Pis. The Pi is not guaranteed to be stable if overclocked. A fan won't make any difference. Heat isn't the issue.

Check to see if there is anything in the logs to indicate the reason for failure.

Nope it usually just goes black. Sometimes it will make a frown and then go black. It has a solid power supply but I over clocked and was probably confusing it a lot w different stuff.

How durible is the camera ribbon connection? It will be buried behind bricks and fished thru to integrate with a bunch of other stuff. Will it be prone to scratching or corrosion where I should do the hdmi connect? I wish someone make a connection to run 2 cat6 instead

Yea this one shut down a few more times. It had happened with a few different power supplies also. I have a bunch of them and need more so looks like a switch a roo on the return is in order

I've got two of my RPis that have nearly reached 140 days
21:59:53 up 137 days, 20:33, 0 users, load average: 0.00, 0.01, 0.05
21:00:03 up 139 days, 44 min, 0 users, load average: 0.43, 0.31, 0.32

they're rock solid and cost less than £4.38/year to run.

That second one runs on UTC all year round, which is why the clock is off by an hour.
