4. LOGIC LEVEL PROBLEMS (WITH LCDs, UARTS, AND OTHER LOGIC DEVICES)

The output levels of the Pi's GPIO are either nearly 0V, or nearly 3.3V. For most modern logical devices, a logic high of 3.3V is enough, but there are exceptions. For example, many 16x2 character LCDs use either the KS0066 or the HD44780 LCD controller: when fed with 5V, these ICs need at least 3.8V, and so only giving them 3.3V may not register reliably as a logic high, resulting in garbled characters, or even the inability to control the LCD at all.

It is possible to level shift the 3.3V GPIO signals to approximately 5V, but you need at least six shifter levels. An easier solution is to lower the voltage the LCD runs off: instead of 5V, feed it 4V. The LCD controller will work happily with 4V, and the needed input level will go down. One simple way to drop the voltage is by simply adding a diode between the 5V supply, and the LCD's IC power-supply pin (Vcc). Almost any diode will do, but we recommend a 1N4148.

The logic level problem may also affect other digital inputs, like shift registers: we recommend always checking the datasheet of the device to see if its Voltage Input High (VIH) is lower than 3.3V.

and then just say no to uploading to the Store (as there isn't one for IoT - yet) and select ARM if you are targeting the Pi

Select Generate App Bundle as 'Never' to get an appx

The cer file you get is only a 'test' certificate (i.e. self certified) which expires after a year. Proper cer files will have to wait for the 'IoT Store' to arrive I believe

If it looks like a miniature copy of the GPU splash screen at startup, then that's the GPU saying there is not enough power to the Pi. Other things may well start to go wrong, WiFi adapters, USB devices, etc.

Fit a bigger/better power supply or start powering other USB devices independently of the Pi.

P.S. Let's hope that this useful feature makes it through DirectX - when it happens

112. How much current will the GPIO pins supply.

One of the first questions you need to ask when considering interfacing anything is, what current can you draw from the output? On this processor particularly, it is not an easy answer. The simplest answer would be 3mA, but a more considered answer might be:-

A maximum of 16mA per pin with the total current from all pins not exceeding 51mA.

When the Pi was designed, they used a figure of 3mA per GPIO pins in determining if the regulator could supply enough current.

Hence the simple 3mA limit mentioned before. However, if not all the pins are supplying current then you can divert those pin’s share of the current into the ones you are using. Hence the total recommended current limit of 17 * 3 = 51mA.

You don't need Windows to write for the Pi, you can use JXCore, NodeJS, or the TinyCC cross-compiler toolchain
