Please fix the audio driver

Sat Jul 21, 2012 8:14 pm

2 months ago audio was in alpha phase and now audio still not fixed yet, loud pop sound whenever application turn audio on. Wondering why audio isn't getting priority as its common for ppl listen to mp3 while doing other stuff, and a loud pop skipping to the next song seriously is a big no for playing music using Pi. And if you pay attention you will also notice noise behind the music.

I know the Pi foundation is busy. Please consider fixing just the loud pop first. Thanks.

Sure its not your speakers popping, sometimes when no sound is being played the speaker turns off, when an application wants to play sound the speaker comes back on.
My mates pi certainly doesnt do this

This commit was an attempt (successful for me) at fixing this:
https://github.com/raspberrypi/firmware ... 5759066295 It was Jun 24 so all the new OS images should already contain it. Are you using up to date firmware on you Rpi ?
Besides, note that all the software fixes is community thing, not foundation actually. So it means someone has to spend his own free time to fix this.

Oh I didn't know it was fixed, but the loud pop still there when playing mp3 with omxplayer. Maybe I have done something wrong, can u please help me check am I missing something? I'm new to Linux, only start learning with Pi.

I'm using the latest raspbian image, did
apt-get update
apt-get upgrade
rpi-update
reboot

When I do uname -a I get this
Linux raspberrypi 3.1.9+ #171 PREEMPT Tue Jul 17 01:08:22 BST 2012 armv61 GNU/Linux

Thanks.

If you are using raspian image from foundation, you should already have this fix installed. Since omxplayer does not use ALSA but "talks" to the sound in more direct way, could you test if you are having similar problems using other playes - mplayer or vlc for example?

Thank you for all the help, looks like the problem is only with omxplayer, able to play without a pop with other players. Seems like its the omxplayer that is broken and with mp3 only, mp4 all ok, since we can play with other players problem solved, thanks again.

I'm using xbmc (raspbmc) with the latest firmware (3.1.9+ #171 PREEMPT Tue Jul 17), and the audio popping is *much* better. Starting, pausing and resuming video no longer pops.

However it still pops loudly when fast-forwarding through video. Is this an issue in the audio driver, or an issue with xbmc?

XBMC uses omxplayer which in turn uses direct sound access, without kernel driver. So it's a bug in omxplayer on in firmware.

Forgive my ignorance as I'm new here and this is my first foray into Linux beyond an Ubuntu LiveCD I used to use when my PC melted, but...

I'm using the latest Wheezy Raspbian image (downloaded two days ago) which I've updated with sudo apt-get update and sudo apt-get upgrade. Installed what I believe to be the latest ALSA utils and used modprobe to get the audio working. Got Shairport on it and using it (successfully) as an AirPlay reciever.

I'm updating everything daily BUT I'm still getting the loud front (and sometimes back) end pops, and the sound quality is VERY crackly if turned up. Best combo is speakers quiet, airplay turned up - the other way around is subject to a lot of static.

Am I doing anything wrong? Is there anything I can do to improve this (short of writing my own ALSA drivers - ha! not a chance!) or am I going to have to sit this out until the (frankly incredible) community come up with some new drivers?

Be gentle. I'm new. Ali

Are you using the most up to date distribution from the download page? That has all the current fixes in it I believe.

I downloaded Raspbian Foundation build at the start of the week, popping was present on mpd via 3.5mm amp & twin speakers, installed & ran rpi-update last night, it upgraded my firmware now the popping between files has disappeared.

Sound quality isn't perfect but adequate. Might have a go at an external USB sometime if a clear winner emerges from people's experience.

Perhaps but I already have my hdmi hooked up to a TV and I don't want to shuffle leads everytime I want to listen to music. With MPD and it's remote control client apps my pi doubles up as my hifi.

Audio is a known issue that several very helpful individuals are working on. Sorry for any inconvenience it causes in the mean time :-)
