Autosound and Navigation

Tue Aug 25, 2015 1:13 am

I am starting this project with asking you for advice.
I have NO experience, but have built many electronic kits over the years.
I want to put USB navigation and auto sound into my shuttle bus.
I will use a R pi and a 10" monitor
I also hope to use remote control for the media choices for video and music, it would be nice too to use wifi while outside starbucks.

There is an article on pi autosound on make magazine, but am looking for feedback esp for hooking up usb sound card for higher quality.
I have alot of auto stereo amps and speakers and would go 5.1 if possible, but may put 2 different systems in the bus, one for traveling and the other for video when sitting.
I know that Navigation can be done, but looking for recommendations here, it would be nice to ditch my Gps for the R pi.
I realize that I am going to buy a bunch of stuff and then figure out how to make it work, but at this juncture any advice is appreciated and instead of blindly buying stuff to get some recommendations by other customers for products that work for them. Thanks for any help

iqaudio.com has a dac for the pi that has rca preamp outs. At this point am looking at this since it doesn't use usb,
still looking for recommendations for a 10" lcd montior? and the software to put this together.

I am surprised that after almost a week, not one person replied, I am a beginner, I have no experience with this and I had hoped someone with any kind of experience would have posted something? Is there another Raspberry Pi forum that is active or maybe just beginners is inactive? Sure could use some ideas here or some response. BTW, I did a search for posting and am suprised that there is very few post re this subject.

There's your answer. Your subject is too far off the mainstream and not helped by having an obscure term in the subject line.

You've also failed to explain what you've tried and what GPS receiver you're trying to connect.

Split your project in two to "navigation" and "car audio". Search for "in car computer" or "carputer" and you may have more success.
Note: Any requirement to use a crystal ball or mind reading will result in me ignoring your question.

I am not trying to be snarky, but I am a beginner with NO EXPERIENCE and it is one project, so that if split would not answer my question. Instead of telling me my project is wrong, why not just speak to the subject? For example if it is not possible to have autosound and Navigation with one raspberry pi, why not just say that and why you feel that way? Very strange. "There's your answer. Your subject is too far off the mainstream and not helped by having an obscure term in the subject line"

I have no idea what mainstream is? I have no experience as stated in the OP, Is it common for people to buy the Raspberry Pi and then do "me too" projects. I thought the whole idea was making something that works for me? I suspect that what you call an "obscure term" has to do with the difference in speaking english between Great Britain and the USA where I live. I haven't a clue as to which word is not understood since Autosound is a common word as is Navigation is also common. I think it is common for people to want one unit that they can use the monitor to back up, for video, for autosound, to monitor auto gauges, for GPS and in fact they are available commercially. I have no idea what part of the post you think is personal, it is 100% about the project I want to do and 0% advice on how to do it?

You've also failed to explain what you've tried and what GPS receiver you're trying to connect.

You clearly didn't understand. If you search for the two halves separately you're more likely to get some results. You can then learn something by making both parts work on just one Raspberry.

https://www.google.com/search?q=raspberry+pi+car+audio gets more than a million results.
https://www.google.com/search?q=raspber ... navigation gets 800,000 results

Hope you manage to get this to work as I'm interested having these features on the one I'm trying to make.
Unfortunately tho they won't paste or link the script for ya on here as they want everyone to learn it.
I've recently found this out after asking advice too. (learning to write script wasn't part of my plans in what I'm making but have been put in a corner).
Im New on here too and haven't got a clue up to now so I hope you get to pick it up well.
Look forward to seeing it in finished format and working, Best of luck pal.

Of what have you no experience? The goal you describe doesn't seem like a beginner's project to me. You are not going to find a step by step tutorial. It isn't like building an electronics kit by following the instructions.

Start simple and learn as you go. If you are impatient you'll need to buy a commercial solution, find/make a friend who can do it for you or pay a professional.

(BTW, I hadn't a clue what 'autosound' meant when I first saw the thread title. )

Well, there are more than one dac offered for sale, many monitors etc, I thought we could get some advice on things that work well.
I don't know if it is possible to have car stereo (same as autosound) and navigation on the same raspberry pi? Maybe some advice on powering it in a motor vehicle (same as auto or car). Telling me that I am over my head actually is helpful, but buying all the stuff is at least $100 and I know that I can do autosound and I know I can do navigation and I know that I can get digital gages and GPS, but I don't know if it can be done on one Raspberry Pi and one monitor or maybe one Rasp pi and two monitors? I don't know if I rip a CD and upload the music to the Rasp Pi if it needs to be in a folder or if I have a thousand songs unorganized. Being a Beginner, I don't know and it would be nice to benefit from the experience of others to find equipment that works and software and understand this new world.
