pianobar unable to open audio file

I am very new to raspberry pi, so please forgive my lack of knowledge here. I've been working on getting pianobar going based on these instructions: http://www.lanmaster53.com/2014/05/rasp ... -pianobar/

I struggled a bit getting things to work since I'm behind a proxy, but I finally got all that sorted out and was able to compile the latest version. Pianobar connects and logs in, but won't play anything. I consistently get

It sounds to me like it could be something to do with the audio driver, which I didn't know what to do on the part where he says to "Configure alsa" so that may be part of the problem?
