I have bought a 1m strip of these:

I have a 5v power pack running them and have managed to get some scripts running a little bit.
This site got me up and running but the script does not work completely, when I run this script all of the lights turn red one by one, then they turn off, then "most" of the leds turn back on in different colours and nothing else happens until I ctrl+c, at which point they trickle back to the start of the strip and some leds stay on, each run leaves different leds on and different colours.

I have found a few other scripts, but I am unable to get anything running completely. Looking at the code on some of these scripts the lights should sequence through a variety of different modes before finishing, I usually get a single action.
So the question is, how do I control these leds?
Is there a site that I have missed today which provides a good explanation as to how to script to control these, I am not looking for anything fancy. My project is for uni and I am hoping to be able to set a colour across the strip and control that colour via voice, possibly JARVIS.
Sorry if my question is to broad, I have next to no knowledge on python but am willing to learn, just need some point of reference to start understanding how to interact with these strips.
