Enable wifi on NOOBS boot

Thu Jul 23, 2015 10:14 am

I don't know this problem maybe discussed before i googled but can't get it solved.

I boot NOOBS but can't get other OS except Raspbian only. Maybe this is cause of can't connect to internet.

So how to enable wifi on NOOBS boot. I use tp link wifi dongle for internet connection. Know i can connect to internet with installed Raspbian.

Thanks for any answer for my question.

tq

As clearly stated in the guides you need a Wired Ethernet Connection to enable the download / install of additional OSes on first boot.

Wireless is not supported in NOOBS Software ;)

tq fruitoftheloom for your replied. i know NOOBS guide only support wired connection but i hope can do anything to NOOBS boot support wifi cause my raspi impossible i think today one anything just only support wired connection it does not practical.

If NOOBS doesn't support wifi. can we add other os to NOOBS boot likes Ubuntu Mate, Openelec, OSMC and the others.

(Yes, I understand that the OP's concern is with what ought to be, rather than with what is. Unfortunately, we can only tell him what he already knows - that is, what is...)

My understanding is that the official download areas currently only provide:
  1. Lite (no OS at all)
  2. Welterweight (just Raspbian)
And that there is no Heavy version currently provided. There should be.
And some folks need to stop being fanboys and see the forest behind the trees.

What if the OP wants to install multiple OSes? Then NOOBS (or similar) is needed.

Just swap cards, NOOBS is OK as a one hit wonder but no future add/remove OS out-of-the-box...

Disagree.

But then again, if I ever found myself agreeing with you, I'd be worried.

Out of curiosity, what is your stand on 2+2? I'm going with 4, but if that turns out to be your stand as well, I'd have to re-consider.

I agree with Joe Schmoe on this point, though I will concede to an intermediate method between NOOBS Lite and a full NOOBS heavy. That would be a set of files and instructions that would *easily* permit adding selected OS packages to NOOBS. Put the data and instructions on a separate page linked from the main download page, as this would not be for the complete beginner.

That said, there is a workaround. That is to use a client access point so that there is a wired connection to the PI, the actual link is wireless. I've used a TP-link TL-WR702N to connect a Pi that way. All it takes is either a Pi with an OS or a separate computer to configure the access client before bringing up the Pi with the NOOBS card to start the installs.

Update to add: According to this: https://www.raspberrypi.org/products/usb-wifi-dongle/ page, the official Raspberry Pi WiFi does work in NOOBS. I have started a thread in which I hope to get confirmation/clarification about this.
