Invalid Device SIgnature

Mon Jul 20, 2015 3:45 pm

Hello!
I recently purchased a gertboard to go along with my raspberry pi. I am trying to program the ATmega328 microcontroller on the board directly without using the arduino IDE, however I have been having problems using avrdude. I keep getting the error "Yikes! Invalid device signature." It says that my device signature is 0x000000, which I know it shouldn't be. Is there a way to manually change it or fix this problem? Please help, I've been trying to find a solution online for over 3 hours with no luck. I have already looked into the /etc/avrdude.conf file, and it has the appropriate signature for an ATmega328.
Thank you!

A zero device signature often means a physical communication error.
Check the connections. (again).
