NFS Server. (obsolete info)

Wed Jul 18, 2012 2:01 pm

Hi,

I'm running Wheezy, and want to get nfs-server working.
NFS client works OK.

I installed nfs server using:

# sudo apt-get install nfs-kernel-server

And, the install appeared to go OK, except that at the end, it warned me that there is no NFS server support in the current kernel.

Does that mean I need to build my own kernel? Or is there a new one available with this support?

I ran into the same thing with the original Wheezy image. I recompiled the kernel with the kernel NFS server as a loadable module.

Check the Raspbian image - I think it has kernel NFSd enabled.

OK,
So, I finally found time to go through the process of compiling my own kernel.

And, a lot of time is what I needed. I gave up on installing the cross tools on to my ageing Fedora desktop. And resolved myself to building the kernel on the Pi itself.

The instructions are quite easy - but the whole process took nearly 12 hours !

But, I now have NFS server support in the kernel.

A bit of setup was required after that - like ensuring that rpcbind is running.

But, now NFS server is working fine.

Ack - 12 hours to compile a kernel image is a lot of pain! Get your cross compiling working before trying that again. If you can't cross-compile, then turn off as much as you can in the kernel config.

I have since switched to the Raspbian image, and it does have NFSd compiled as a kernel module.

I'm trying for days now to get nfs working, but I keep getting told that nfs-kernel-server exited with code 11. I would love to know where I can find either a Jessie Lite image with nfs support or a good how-to.

I should add perhaps that return code 11 is quite unusual. After two days of browsing search engine pages, as well as asking people who use nfs professionally, nobody ever had that!

Kindly,

Arikania
