Could I use a MicroSD, with adaptor, in my Raspberry Pi?

Yes, if your Pi is "less than" (i.e., "prior to") the B+.

At the B+, they switched to using MicroSD, so you don't need the adapter anymore.
And some folks need to stop being fanboys and see the forest behind the trees.

(One of the best lines I've seen on this board lately)

thanks.

I've followed all the instructions and installed the software onto the sd card, plugged in pi as instructed - but no light has come on.

what do you suggest

If no lights have come on the Pi is not getting enough power. Check PSU and micro USB lead. How are you powering it?
