aplay stop/pause?

Does anyone know how or if it's possible to stop or pause the aplay player in the command line and then resume?

Checked the options and it doesn't seem to exist but asking anyway. -- thank you

by the way, I'm using raspian as an OS. what is amixer? I'm not familiar with it. is that part of raspian? could I use a command line with it to pause or stop? even exit aplay completely? -thanks

answering myself --

use amixer to mute or unmute

sudo amixer set PCM mute (or unmute)
