Booting

I have found that the rpi boots and advances to the prompt if I have a powered USB hub with a USB connection between the hub and one of the USB ports on the rpi. I don't seem to need to connect power with the mini usb power connection. Is that a good thing?

No it isn't! Through this "upstream" connection only a small amount of current can flow into the PI, due to the 140mA current limiting fuses in the PI (F1 and F2). And its not enough power to reliably power the R-Pi. All power should enter through the "front door", not the "back exit"
