Gembird 300Mbps dongle not working in OpenElec with Kodi

Tue Jul 07, 2015 10:54 am

Hi Guys,

I have a question about a wifi dongle I bought for my Pi2.
I bought it hoping I would get the Pi2 up and running with NOOBS...but that didn.t turn out like I wanted to.
So I bought a OpenElec SD-card with Kodi installed. After I connected all the things to the Pi2 (mouse, keyboard and wifi dongle) I plugged in the power supply. Every thing worked great...except for the wifi dongle. My network did not pop-up on the wifi settings screen. So I don't think it's supported in OpenElec.
Is that true? Can I make it work? Or do I have to buy a new wifi dongle?

Thanks in advance for helping!

With kind regards,
Mike

RTL8192EU Chipset is afaiaa not natively supported in OpenElec

fyi NOOBS is an installer/chooser and not the Operating System, you would likely had installed Raspbian OS, see this for Raspbian Driver:

Thanks for your fast reply Fruitoftheloom! :D
Then I'll use this dongle for a windows pc and order a new dongle the reseller confirmed me would work with OpenElec.
They sell it specificly with Pi's with OpenElec/Kodi installed.
If it doesn't work I could sent it back to them. :D

Oh...one more thing: I want to take the Pi with me on my holliday so I can watch movies I have on a portable harddrive.
But when I connect the Harddrive to the Pi2 it's underpowered. Can this be solved with a powered USB hub?
Connect the harddrive to the powered USB HUB and the hub to the Pi2?

The RPi B+ and 2B should be able to power a 2.5" USB Hard Drive see the following blog:

In a nutshell you add the following to the 'config.txt' file

Code: Select all

max_usb_current=1

Okay....but I'm not a programmer. Though this I can handle. :lol: Cut and past if you ask me.
But what I mean is that I don't know how to change the .txt file or in what program for that matter.
Can I just unplug the SD-card...insert it in a windows pc and change the file with notepad?
Or must it be done from within kodi? But Kodi is a media program...not editor.
At that part I get stuck. :oops:

Okay, thanks for your reply.
I'm a bit scared because I already wrecked a 16GB sd-card and my OpenElec is just working fine now. :mrgreen:
But I'll give it a go tonight! ;)

I've inserted the SD-card into a windows laptop....opent up the config.txt file but I get stuck again.
The artikel say's to put the line "safe_mode_gpio=4" or "max_usb_current=1" in the config file....but it doesn't say were it needs to be written down. :(
From the file contence I see it is devided into "chapters" like Memory, Overclocking, overscan, ect. but I have no idea were to put the "max_usb_current=1". I'm to scared I f*ck up the coding and need to buy another pre-installed OpenElec sd-card :mrgreen:
Done here you see the content of my config.txt file.
I hope someone can direct me to the location were I need to put that line in.

Thanks in advance from a newbie. :geek:

You can add it to the very bottom, it doesn't matter. If you want dress it up to look like the rest and add a little info on how the settings got there do this

Code: Select all

################################################################################
# End of default configuration
################################################################################

################################################################################
# User added configuration
max_usb_current=1
safe_mode_gpio=4
################################################################################

################################################################################
# all values below this line were inserted from config.txt.bk (your old config)
# and can be merged with the above values

Thanks for the reply JimmyN. :D
But in your code add there's still the "safe_mode_gpio=4" line.
From reading the artikel provided by fruitoftheloom I thought the "max_usb..." code replaced the "save_mode..." code.
But I'll just put it in the config.txt file. Don't think it can do much harm.

Thanks again for helping me out!

I was just providing an example and clarifying where you could put changes, not the actual entries.

Code: Select all

The artikel say's to put the line "safe_mode_gpio=4" or "max_usb_current=1" in the config file....but it doesn't say were it needs to be written down.
I guess I shouldn't have used both entries in my example.
