Creating SD card image

So I've managed to compile updated Raspbian with Cirrus Logic Audio. Don't ask how i've made it with 0 knowledge - good instructions I guess. Anyway, it's on 32Gb SD card now, and I want to make img of this system for a backup. Linux Mint's Disks program makes 32Gb sized image.
So here is the Q: How do I create img of the system on SD card without rest empty space of SD card? (so it can be restored on 4 or 16 Gb card in the future)

Another way is to create the needed partitions on a new but smaller SD card, and then copy everything over to the smaller card using rsync.
