Is this overclock setting safe

Thu Jul 02, 2015 8:15 pm

Hi I have the gpu frequency to 500 "gpu_freq=500" is that a stable overclock? Also what benefit will the raspberry pi have with the gpu overclocked.
By thinking like an engineer you can create a raspberry pi.
Michael Jackson enthusiast.
I got the PI model B, B+ and PI 2 model B.
When will I get the A? I don't know.

This will run all parts of the GPU at 500 MHz. I've been using that on all my RPis (B, B+, 2 B)without any problems.

One advantage is, for example, that I can play 1080p60 video with perfect quality.

I doubt 3D will run at 500MHz, so you may have problems there. (Try hello_teapot to check if it works).

In general I'd say v3d_freq=300, h264_freq=400 and core_freq=500 will work on most Pi's (but all this is overclocking, so no guarantees).

If you are lucky and have a faster than average Pi you may get higher, but I've never seen 3D working at 500MHz.

I've been using that on 4 RPis (B, B+, B2) and it seems to work. I don't so much 3d stuff but all my pi3D programs and demos work well.

I've just tried, and sure enough hello_teapot is running with v3d_freq=500 and h264_freq=500 (on the Pi2 that happens to be on my desk).
Interesting. In the early days (of Pi1) it was clear that v3d overclocked the least, then h264 then core.
I suspect that is still the case, but it seems the numbers are better than they used to be.

Possibly due to improvements in manufacturing (the variation in wafers tends to be a bit tighter nowadays).
It's also possible some firmware updates (tweaks to PPLs and where clocks are divided) may have helped a little.

This "gpu_freq=500" help chromium and the hardware accelerated vlc in any way?

Hardware accelerated VLC maybe (I don't know why you're not using Omxplayer) but chromium doesn't have any hardware acceleration. And you won't get a major speed boost from overclocking.
There are 10 types of people: those who understand binary and those who don't.

Omxplayer doesn't play streams well. Some stream plays and then exit when watching for a few minutes but vlc plays all streams well and i can use my multimedia keyboard with the multimedia keys with vlc compare to omxplayer.
